Music: Has it hit a 'flat' note?0
By - Posted 4th July, 2015 at 9:09 pm

Popular culture, 21st century music. We’re now in 2011 C. E., that’s rather impressive even for me who is a complete History geek. One aspect of History which is increasingly overlooked is how music has evolved. I mean we look at books, Shakespeare to Carol Ann Duffy. Just remember, music can be written! Technology, Bill Gates has done wonders- I’d like to point out that music requires a lot of technology in the present day. There are lots of things which music can be associated to, however what has it done to our lives? I’d like to warn you that this article is written in an immensely argumentative tone, so much so there is bias involved. If you disagree with anything I say, it would be nice to make this article ‘come to life‘ by clicking “Read More & Comment” and doing exactly that… reading more and commenting!

Many are influenced by different sorts of artists, to a point where some crazy lunatic may possibly want to be that celebrity. In response to that, are you OK? Why would you want to be someone else? You’re yourself; go and live with it as personally I think you’re silly if you don’t want to be who you are originally. This is what I think is so flaming monstrous that celebrities think that they have permission to show-off and act as if they own more than just an album, all eyes at Lady Gaga there with her stupid suit.

Whilst I continue to endeavour my rant about music, I will inform you about lyrics. I think lyrics are more than important in a song; to an extent more important than any riff or ostinato patterns involved. Obviously there are some artists which don’t agree with me on that one. For example, Rebecca Black. With all due respect, who the heck cares what seat you’re going to take? Judging by the way your voice has been developed by technology, Miss Black, I’d be rather nervous sitting next to a robot! I don’t support singers under sixteen who have had that short list road to success… I think she doesn’t either seeing as she certainly doesn’t have “SUCCEEDED!” on her passport to music. This has taken over as worst song in history (see the links I’m making?!)- Friday is weekly Doomsday now thanks to her.

With shock, I am actually not going to rant about the quality of Justin Bieber. There’s nothing I can say about him which either won’t get me dismissed or has not been mentioned earlier. Instead, I am going to have a lengthy chat about technology. I think there are quite a few positive aspects about music technology, the fact that things can be changed, however, surely singing is actually singing, not speaking words then getting the pitch frequency changed?  In addition, I’d also comment on how you can’t recognise who it’s by- I can’t find any similarities between two of Rihanna‘s latest songs for instance and it seems a bit silly to become a new person each time, bit like what I was saying earlier with the “trying to be a celebrity” argument.

By this point you’re probably thinking to yourself “when are you going to say something nice?” and in answer to your question, now. I was really tempted to write “never!” here but I didn’t, I want to write something lovely. It’s terrific how everything’s changed. Imagine having ten new composers who all had the same sort of Mozart-style motifs but in the 21st century, repetitive much? Something I forgot to mention earlier actually, there’s too much repetition in some songs, I’ve already ripped Friday though so maybe I’ll gloss over that argument. It’s nice that there’s such a broad variety now and everyone has some sort of different taste!

What are your thoughts on music in our society? Do you reckon that the alcohol and sex references are a good influence for younger children, maybe even adults with a few mental issues? What about the types of songs which are being played now and the ages where artists are allowed to have a recording contract? Leave a comment and get involved!
