Just today the UK announced their performer for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012: Engelbert Humperdinck.
At the age of 75, some people believe he isn’t in the right physical state to compete, but look at Bruce Forsyth, who at 93 still presents Strictly Come Dancing! He is most famous for singing “Release Me” which went straight to #1, holding of the Beatles (you could say he beat them, beat the Beatles… Well I thought it was funny…) He said it was “an absolutehonour that I’m really excited for“.
This year, the show will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan. Engelbert will perform on the 26th of May, the finals. As Britain is one of the 5 biggest contributors to the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) they automatically get a place in the finals, along with France, Spain, Germany and Italy. Azerbaijan as the host also receive a place, totaling 6. The song for the UK’s entry song is, as of yet, undecided.
However, some long-term residents of Baku have been forcibly evicted from their homes to make way for the new stadium. At one point, the government considered building a floating arena in the sea for the occasion! In his 45-year career. Engelbert (born Arnold Dorsey, and is still legally named that) has sold over 150 million songs and albums, although his last hit was nearly 2 decades ago.
What do you think? Are you ready for the show, even though it’s 3 months away (I certainly am!)? Or are you a bit less interested in Europe’s favourite TV show? Leave your thoughts below!
