The first qualifying session of the 2011 Formula One season kicked off this morning in Australia. With new changes such as a moveable rear wing, different tyre supplier and the return of KERS among many new drivers – competition was fought to be fierce.
Current World Champion and Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel however managed to secure a very safe pole position for the second year in a row at the Melbourne Street Circuit ahead of tomorrows race. Behind the World Champion, was British driver Lewis Hamilton whilst Mark Webber managed to grab third in what is his home grand prix.
Jenson Button could only manage a fourth place start in his McLaren, whilst seven-time champion Michael Schumacher could only manage 11th place. Also trailing behind the front of the pack was the Ferraris who qualified 5th place (Alonso) and 8th place (Massa) respectively.
Among the rookie drivers, beginning their Formula One careers this year is new Brit on the block Paul Di Resta who will be driving for the Force India team following a recent testing stint over the last few years. Di Resta will be starting in 14th two positions ahead of his experienced team mate Sutil.
The Australian Grand Prix takes place from 6am (UK time) whilst coverage first begins at 5am on BBC One in the UK.
