The government are now committed on allowing gay couples to be legally wed in the UK. It is announced that a consultation will be launched ahead of the general election next spring to discuss how they will legalise marriage for couples of the same sex.
At present, only “multi gender” couples are allowed to get legally married, whilst gay couples are only allowed to enter a civil partnership. A civil partnership is basically the same as marriage, however it’s used by gay couples who are not legally allowed to be married. There is still a legal procedure for “divorce” in civil partnerships.
Both coalition parties back this move; however it’s believed that conservative activists will be outraged. Gay Rights organisations will welcome this news, however they still believe that a consultation is not necessary, and that the change of law should be completed immediately.
