Former singer Poly Styrene from the group X-Ray Spex has passed away
The former singer with punk group X-Ray Spex has passed away at the age of fifty three. Poly Styrene, who was one of the first female punk icons had cancer of the spine and breast.
Poly Styrenes real name was Marianne Elliot – Said and she formed her band after seeing the Sex Pistols perform on Hastings Pier when she was just eighteen years of age.
In 1980 she left the music scene to join the Hare Krishnas, moving into a Krishna temple in Hertfordshire. She also suffered from bipolar disorder.
She had so many fans all over the world and some of them were celebrity’s. These are some of the messages some celebrity’s left when they heard about her passing away. Jonathan Ross left a Twitter message saying that the X-Ray Spex the first band that he saw live. Another message that came from her good friend Boy George who said ‘Oh bless you Poly, you will be missed’. Lastly there was a message from Martin Kemp who was star turned actor said that it was Poly Styrene who gave him so much ambition when he was a punk.
