May Day! Larry the cat to continue as Chief Mouser!1
By - Posted 13th July, 2016 at 10:32 pm The Real World

Today has been a very important day for Britain. Much sooner than everyone expected, a new Prime Minister has officially been asked by the Queen to form a government and David Cameron has officially resigned. At midday today, Cameron was present for his last ever Prime Minister’s Questions and was widely praised by his party for the hard work he has done during his time in power. He also received a standing ovation from the Conservative party at the conclusion of the event.

Later this afternoon, a moment in history was made as David Cameron visited the Queen to resign. The Queen’s next meeting was with our new Prime Minister Theresa May, who she officially asked to form a government. It has also been announced that Larry the cat will continue his role as ‘Chief Mouser’ at Number 10 and will not be moving out with the Cameron family. Continue reading to find out more about our new Prime Minister and Larry the cat!

Theresa May

Theresa May is the first female Prime Minister since Margaret Thatcher. She is highly experienced in politics and held her previous role of home secretary for more than six years. She has voted consistently in support of same sex marriage. Although during the European Union referendum she was supporting the remain campaign, she now faces the tough battle of ensuring the terms are negotiated appropriately for Britain leaving the EU.

Mrs May has type one diabetes and has to inject herself with insulin twice a day. Often described as a ‘tough woman with strong principles’ many have likened her to Margaret Thatcher, whilst others have said there are parts of her ideologies which could be representative of Labour party views. Do you think she has what it takes to steer the country in the right direction? Let us know in the comments below.

Larry the Cat

Theresa May not only gained a new role today, she also gained a new pet! Larry the cat has been ‘Chief Mouser’ at Number 10 Downing Street since 2011 and is responsible for chasing away any unwanted visitors. He follows the likes of Humphrey and Sybil who have also held the role in the past. David Cameron described his love for Larry and there’s even a picture circulating of the two together.

It makes me sad to imagine what Larry must be thinking now that his old friend has left and he has this new owner all of a sudden. Some users joked on Twitter this afternoon that Larry was actually in charge for a while during the period between David Cameron resigning and Theresa May being asked to form a government.
