“Why would you put Habbox on your CV??”

These are things I hear all the time when I tell people I have Habbox on my CV. To me, it is RIDICULOUS to put time and effort into a job, whether it be online or in real life, and not reap the rewards from it. Especially if you have a senior position, that shows a huge amount of skill and you SHOULD show that off? For a prospective employer, volunteer jobs are GREAT. It shows you’re passionate about working even when there’s no financial reward. Whether that’s in a charity shop or online why does it matter?

The big thing I think people face is admitting they use Habbo or fansites. Trust me when I say people really don’t care – most people interviewing you won’t even know what it is so they won’t think “what a baby”. If you don’t want to admit you still do it, then say you did it for 2 years? They won’t know when you stopped doing it, unless you tell them.

Depending on the job you’re applying for, you’ll want to write a slightly different thing probably. For me, when I was applying for news jobs I made a big deal out of the fact that I was the news manager for a large website and forum built for young adults. I said that I had written over 100 articles on a range of topics, from real life news to news about the site, lifestyle, fashion, and everything in between! I also put a big emphasis on the fact that I had been rewarded for my excellent work by promotions to Senior Writer and eventually News Manager, managing a team of 10 writers!

Another few jobs I’ve applied to include a graphics job, where I printed out the best badges I’ve done – um, hello, your art is good enough to be featured on a major game? That’s a massive achievement!

My latest job applications were about websites and web management. Before I was General Manager, I was the Content AGM – which means that overseeing this site and the wiki were my jobs. They’re big sites that get quite a few visitors every month, and the wiki is a great resource that’s used by loads of people, including Habbo staff. In fact, my latest job picked it up from my CV and said they were particularly impressed with it!

If you’re events or competitions staff, you can say you were responsible for running competitions to entertain a forum with thousands of members (which is stretching the truth when you think about active members, but it is TECHNICALLY true!). If you’re a DJ, then you have great people skills, because of the interacting you have to do, and you have good software skills and teamwork as there are lots of DJs!

Whatever job you have, there is a way to spin it. If you want my help (even if you’re not Habbox I’ll help) to write a little intro for you to use on your CV I’m happy to.

PS – if you’ve put a LOT of work into Habbox, why not use us as a REFERENCE? I’d be more than happy to if someone asked me (and they had worked hard enough to deserve it). When I was younger I used my charity shop manager (where I worked) as a reference – and again, just treat fansite jobs as a volunteer role!
