Last night, the NME Awards sponsored by Shockwave were held at London’s O2 Academy Brixton. The big winners of the night were American band My Chemical Romance, who walked away with two trophies.
The band, fronted by Gerard Way, won the award for Best International Band, and Best Video for their inexplicably lengthy titled song Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na). Way also lost out on the Hero of the Year award along with Kanye West, to pop superstar Lady Gaga.
Canadian group Arcade Fire seem to be raking in the big awards recently, picking up another gong for Best Album for their album The Suburbs, which also won prizes at the BRITs and Grammy Awards. However their video for We Used to Wait was amongst the few that lost out to My Chemical Romance in the Best Video category.
The award for Best British Band went to Muse again for the second year in a row. Front man Matt Bellamy also picked up the award for Hottest Man, with Alison Mosshart named Hottest Woman. Relatively unknown singer Laura Marling won the award for Best Solo Artist, following on from her Best Female win at the BRITs last week, while Scot rockers Biffy Clyro were named Best Live Band, and synthpop duo Hurts won Best New Band.
The NME Awards are known for their ‘fun’ categories, and this year it seems like teen pop sensation Justin Bieber was on the end of a lot of those jokes, ‘winning’ the awards for Least Stylish, and Worst Album for My World. Sorry beliebers!
However a number of prestigious awards were also given out to truly celebrate musical achievement. Dave Grohl, who closed the show with his band Foo Fighters, won the Godlike Genius award, to huge applause. British singer PJ Harvey won the prize for the Teenage Cancer Trust’s Outstanding Contribution To Music, experimental duo Crystal Castles won the John Peel Award for Innovation, while upcoming New Zealand band The Naked And Famous won the Philip Hall Radar Award, which celebrates upcoming music.
