If you haven’t you have now. They call it the Door To Hell and it’s in an unlikely place, the desert. The giant crater was made by geologists more than 40 years ago and the flames have been burning ever since. If you’re wondering how exactly it was created then wonder no more! Soviet geologists were drilling at the site in 1971 and tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas.
The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed which left a hole with a diameter of 70 whole metres. Amazing but true. People feared that the hole could release gases that were poisonous so they decided to burn it off. They never thought that it would still be burning today. It attracts tourists and locals alike who are still amazed by it. The flames can still be seen for miles and although in 2010 they ordered it to be closed it never did happen, yet. Hopefully it won’t because it’s a pretty neat thing.
