Since July, when it was first uploaded, it has gained more than 808 million views. The video makes fun of consumerism of a suburb of the South Korean capital Seoul, called Gangnam, hence the name of the song. Psy dances as if he is on a horse during the video, holding the reins and spinning a lasso, which is now a dance move that is trending all over the world.
In the video, the 34-year-old pop artist is shown resting on a sun lounger, gazing longingly at a girl dancing on a train, and also at a woman working out on a beach. The dance has sparked very many copycat versions, being performed by a massively wide fan-base, ranging from Filipino prison inmates to Eton College schoolboys. Even one performed in the Star Trek language Klingon has been made.
Gangnam Style has won best video at the MTV Europe Music Awards this year, and has also topped the charts at number one in 28 countries. It currently also holds the Guinness World Record for the most liked song ever, with just under 5.4 million likes on YouTube.
