Recent studies have shown shocking results about the numeracy skills that many adults have.
At a national level, 24% of adults lack basic numeracy skills that are needed for getting jobs and also fitting into society to a certain extent. The worst areas for this are London, the North East, the North West and the East Midlands. In these areas, around 25% of adults portray levels of mathematics that are even worse than what the average 9 year old has. This can cause serious disadvantages in life for people like this, both in their working life and their role as a parent.
The studies revealed shocking figures about the levels of reading and writing in England as well. As a whole, around 15% of adults lack basic literacy skills, being similar in ability to that of an 11 year old. This is highest in London and the North East, where 17% of people have this problem.
As a result to all of this, funding for the teaching of Maths and English has been doubled. GCSEs in both of these subjects are also being offered to adults who missed out before, with special adult classes. I have to admit that these findings are pretty shocking, but what are your views?
