As the Olympic Games are nearing, many of you would think that the Olympic spirit would begin to shine through, especially in London where the games will be held. At the moment, however, this is not the case. A few days ago, a fight broke out in a shopping centre just yards from the Olympic Village and this resulted in 3 men being stabbed, one fatally.

The fatally stabbed man (that has now been named as Liam Woodards) died because of his wounds. The other 2 men only suffered minor injuries from the incident.

Since the incident, 5 men have been arrested and 4 of these men remain in custody in connection with the attack that happened at Westfield Stratford City. They say that the shopping centre is working closely with the police at this time but that further details cannot yet be released as this remains a police matter.

The police also say that they believe that some shoppers may have captured video footage of the incident on their mobile phones, and are appealing for anyone that has any information about the incident to come forward and speak to them. If footage can be found of the incident, it may help to confirm what the motives of the attack were, and who was responsible for it.

I think that, in a time that we should be coming together as a nation, this attack is shocking and has the potential to be devastating, not just to the families of the injured, but to the nation as a whole. If an attack like this can happen, nothing can stop it happening during the Olympics, and publicity based around this stabbing and any further events like this will be unwelcome to put it mildly.
