Is it possible to renew a series after its been cancelled? Most of the time not. But apparently there is a yellow light on the way for one show…

Not many shows end up getting renewed or even considered to be likely to get renewed once they’re cancelled. There is one show however, that may have a chance of renewal! That show is Shadowhunters.

The series was based upon the Mortal Instruments books by Cassandra Clare. 3 seasons have been completed with the second half of S3 to air next year. Due to financial issues the show had to be cancelled as well as it not getting picked up by a network. The series stars Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Mathew Daddario and Emeraude Toubia. It had been premiering on Freeform since 2016 with a large fanbase.

It seems that the fanbase is what is causing the possibility of the show being renewed – that’s right! Fans are doing everything they can to have the series renewed. There have been petitions, signatures signed, tweets saying #SaveShadowhunters. The recent action that fans have taken is actually putting together their money and releasing the #SaveShadowhunters tag on billboards. It has been revealed that all the ads on the billboards – including in the iconic Times Square – will end on the 10th of August. The latest is said to be in Seoul, South Korea on a subway station! When the show was cancelled the network Freeform released a statement discussing the ending of the show stating, “We were very happy creatively with it. They delivered what the fans wanted. I remember being at Comic-Con and seeing the excitement for the show and thinking, ‘This could be our Supernatural.'”

Katherine McNamara – who plays main lead Clary on the show – came forward and spoke in regards to the future of the show stating, “Basically, we have no idea what’s going to happen with the show”. The singer and actress then continued on discussing the fans efforts on trying to bring the series back, “We know what kind of fandom we have, but seeing it first hand and seeing you guys come out of the woodwork to support us was mind blowing.” The actress has joined up in the #SaveShadowhunters campaign alongside the fans.

As for what is now happening, not all is great. Netflix are not on board with the plan of renewing the show like everyone else, it has been revealed that they are in denial. However producers of the Shadowhunters series have said to be in discussions with other networks – just not Netflix.

Series Producer Martin Moszkowicz released a statement saying,  “We are in ongoing discussions with the network and Netflix to how we can continue to bring Cassandra Claire’s vision to television.” He also made a statement in regards to Constantin Film (which is the other network in talks) and their thoughts on this, saying he is “eager to carry on with the show with its existing partners or with others, but it needs the U.S. and international components to continue production. [They are] amazed by the dedication and persistence of the incredible fandom of Shadowhunters and the #SaveShadowhunters campaign.”

As for now, no decisions have officially been made so for now everything will air next year for its possible final season. However fans are not giving up anytime soon!
