Challenges of not being straight in a Muslim community0
By - Posted 15th January, 2018 at 5:30 pm The Real World

This subject is a taboo, due to strict religious views upon sexuality in the Islamic Religion. However being a pansexual coming from a Muslim family I find it necessary to address. What I will address in this article is suggestions on how to handle this topic as a non-straight Muslim.

This article may offend some readers. Please click read more if you’d like to carry on.

Do not feel obligated to come out the closet before you are ready, and think your words through before taking this step.

For various reasons I have not come out the closet to my family yet but plan to do it in the future when I find the right time and way.

Think your religious views through.

I personally have looked at Islam and their views on non-binary sexuality, and come to the conclusion that I cant be a part of them and therefore have decided that I am no longer a Muslim.

Find others in the same situation as you.

It is hard to believe but it is possible to find other Muslims or former Muslims who has been in the same situation, I have found online chat communities such as Habbo a great place to look, as it is easier to open up about these things online to a “stranger” than it is face to face.

There is nothing wrong with you.

No matter what anyone ever tells you there is nothing wrong with you. Sexuality is a human need and you should be able to express yours freely.

It is okay to reach out for help.

If you feel this topic to be hard to work with then you are right, but it is always okay to reach out for help to a person you trust or professionally through a helpline. Here is a link to various gay helplines who will take your questions or just listen if you have a story you feel the need to come out with. Remember you will always be anonymous contacting these helplines, and you can leave anytime you want if you feel the person is crossing your boundaries or you feel uncomfortable http://www.bgiok.org.uk/links/helplines.html.

To end up my article I would like to hear your thoughts on this topic and if you are in the same boat as me.

And remember all of these are just suggestions and my personal way to cope with it, find out what is best for you and go that route.

Feel free to comment your own opinions.
