Tale of Broken Bones0
By - Posted 5th July, 2017 at 10:35 pm The Real World

Have you ever broken a bone? This weekend I broke a bone for the third time. Click “read more” if you want to find out more!

If any of you know me, you’ll know I’m an absolute klutz. I’m forever doing stupid things, falling over, and injuring myself. I always thought it was a really common thing for people to break bones but after talking to people, the majority have never even broken a bone before (and here I am on number bone number 3).

The first time I ever broke a bone was when I was in year 4 (aged 9). My birthday had just passed and we had loads of large hula hoops left over as we used to give them away instead of a party bag. Me being stupid, I pulled the hula hoop apart so it made a ‘C’ shape. I climbed up one of the trees in my back garden and reassembled the hoop with a little bit of tape, then proceeded to sit into the hoop. Of course the hoop and tape combination didn’t hold my weight and I instantly fell out the tree landing on my arm. My mum came out to find me and saw I’d hurt my arm and looked broken so she took me to A&E. Whilst waiting, I enjoyed pushing the chairs around A&E even using my broken arm, but because of this the doctors concluded before x-raying that my arm can’t possibly be broken and sent me home. After not being able to move my arm for 2 days my mum decided something definitely isn’t right. She took me back to A&E where they finally x-rayed it and discovered it was broken. I then got to enjoy a nice 6-8 weeks with a bright pink cast on all throughout my summer holidays!

The second time I broke a bone wasn’t until years later when I was 14. We had a sports day at school where me and my sister signed up to do the three-legged race. It came to our race and we were in the lead by a fair amount. My sister however stopped halfway through which made me fall and land on my hand. We got back up and still came second but I noticed my hand getting swollen and bruised. They had a little medical bit that I went to and they said how they were concerned thinking it may be broken and called my mum to take me to A&E. After a long wait I finally got seen and it was in fact broken. They put me in a cast and just sent me a referral to fracture clinic in a couple weeks. Again, this happened just before summer holidays so I spent my summer in a cast. I had a holiday booked for a couple weeks later though and wanted to go swimming and took the cast off myself. Not all bad though, I had 2 members of The Vamps sign my cast before I threw it away.

Last night I broke yet another bone after my prom. At 11:30 we got kicked out of the venue that was holding our year 13 prom and people made the decision to go clubbing after rather than going home. I had never been clubbing before so was definitely up for it. From about 5pm I was in heels non-stop until 11pm when I gave up with them and just walked everywhere barefoot. When we got to the club my friends made my put my shoes on otherwise we weren’t allowed to go in. The club we went to had an awful design where when you walk in you have to go down 2 little flights of stairs. By this point my feet were pretty dead (and I’d had a bit to drink which didn’t help) and when I went down the stairs I tripped. As I fell, my hand got caught on the handrail and then landed on the same hand. Instantly my finger was hurting a lot, bruised and was swollen. About half an hour later I decided to leave the club and went home where I thought it’d be best to leave it until the morning. When I woke up in the morning, my pinky/little finger was swollen and turning a different colour. I told my mum and she got me a doctor’s appointment where they x-rayed it for me. They decided that if it was a minor fracture they’ll just strap it at the doctors and leave it at that, however any more and they’d have to send me to A&E. With my luck, of course it wasn’t a small fracture and I had to get the bus to A&E so they could also refer me to have an appointment with the fracture clinic meaning they can check up on it. All they did is strap my fingers together, tell me to keep it like this for 4 weeks, referred me to a fracture clinic in 2 weeks time and sent me on my way. Same as the other two times, my summer has just begun meaning I’ll have to deal with this for the rest of summer (and holiday next week).

To summarise, I’m dumb, clumsy, and always seem to injure myself at the beginning of summer. If you’ve ever broken a bone (or not) please post below and tell me your story!
