This week, from the 23rd August to the 26th August, the world’s best robotic athletes competed in the RoboWorld Cup, originally founded in 1996, which this year was held in Britain for the first time ever, in Bristol. Over 200 different competitors from 27 teams took part this year, with many gold medals won across many sporting events. The above picture shows a robot, Robocop, competing in the weightlifting trials.
The chance to host this prestigious event was won by the Bristol Robotics Laboratory. A professor from Bristol University, Dr Guido Herrman, believed that this competition would help boost tourist numbers in the area. He stated that they were looking forward to seeing teams from all around the world, and that he believed the competition would push the boundaries of robotics to the limit, providing an excellent opportunity for the public eye to see what robots are really capable of. He also added that although varying greatly from the Olympics, this was another perfect opportunity to showcase what Britain is capable of.
